"Build a world, create characters and tell stories!" ― Toca Boca | Toca Boca World[[source]]

Overview[]

Toca Boca World {formerly Toca Life World or full name: Toca Life World: Build a Story) is a dollhouse simulator mobile game available on the Google Play, Apple App Store and Amazon Appstore.[1] The game was launched on November 22, 2018.[2]

Monetization[]

Toca Boca World uses the free-to-play model with additional purchases. Additional content can be purchased in the shop, prices vary depending on the region. However, this can be disabled in the settings of the app. [3]

Gameplay[]

It comes with 8 locations and 39 characters, similar with the content from Toca Life: City, for free.[4] Players receive gifts found in the Post Office every Friday.[5] Content from previously downloaded Toca Life apps are playable once linked within the app. [6][7] [8] Players can explore locations and interact with characters and items, such as feeding and dressing up. It also lets them create and decorate characters and houses, as well as change facial expressions and characters in locations.[9]

Start-up[]

When the game was downloaded for the first time or reinstalled, an opening cutscene of the Toca Boca logo appears then transitions to an animation and eventually rolls the start screen. The start screen of the game shows the play button, Toca Life Mix and News button on the opposing corners of the screen.

Once a player tap the play button, the Loading cutscene follows. A cutscene shows where the "world" opens up to give way for the default district (Bop City) and other free locations to simultaneously "build" various locations. When the locations are already "builded", another cutscene leads to the Loft Apartment and introduces the area with the first two characters: Nonoko and Rita.

After exiting the Loft Apartment, a tab at the right corner of the screen invites to use the Character Creator button to create custom character(s). Any character that was created was redirected to Floople Friends, the second location. Once players exit the location, a tab at the left pops up, which is tied to the Shop.

Two types of cutscene serve as transitions of the game. The Loading Screen shows up when a player enters a location or a Home Designer building. The Saving Screen shows when a player leaves.

World Map[]

The World Map (shortened to Map) is a sphere-like projection that shows the exterior view of locations and Home Designer houses within a larger area. The map is divided into regions called Districts which contains a set of locations. Each District has its own climate and theme of locations. The Map rolls like a wheel, showing more districts.

In every district, locations and Home Designer building "listen" to the beat by nodding in a sequence.

Characters[]

Characters are the interactional element of the game They can be human-like, anthropomorphic and animal-like character. These can be dragged in any direction following a 2D-like path. Characters possess unique sets of expression where they respond by eating, drinking, being sit on chairs, stools or putting to sleep. Their expression can be changed using Character Expressions,

Non-human characters produce sounds when picked up, tapped or responded by certain objects. They have unique expression depending on their species. These include animals (species that imitate in real life), creatures (species that differ from real life) and Crumpets

Characters created from the Character Creator have a generic set of expressions compared to those included in locations.

Items[]

Items are draggable objects that can be held by characters and can be carried along the Sidewalk. These include small-scale objects such as gifts from the Post Office, medium-sized objects like office chairs, bicycles and collapsible furniture and non-human characters.
